A MAN suffered potentially 'life-changing' injuries during an attack that police are treating as attempted murder.

The brutal assault was inflicted in Banbury's George Street at about 5am yesterday morning.

Spokesman Jack Abell said this afternoon: "Officers attended the scene where a man had been assaulted and had sustained possibly life-changing injuries.

"He was taken to hospital for treatment where he remains."

The force has not yet said if the assault involved a weapon or revealed any details about the injuries.

Officers arrested a 21-year-old man from Banbury on suspicion of attempted murder.

He has been released on bail until December 12 for further investigation at Banbury Police Station.

Stagecoach Oxford tweeted to tell bus passengers that services were being diverted because the road was closed.

George Street in Banbury town centre is home to pubs, takeaway shops and a homeless shelter but police have not said where exactly the attack happened.

In October the force made arrests for another suspected attempted murder in the town when a man in his 20s was seriously assaulted in Southam Road.

Police have not suggested the crimes are linked.

Anyone with any information relating to the George Street attack can call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
