Play teaches Oxfordshire's pupils a serious safety message

SCHOOL pupils are watching performances of a hard-hitting road safety play aimed at cutting the number of child pedestrians and cyclists injured on the county’s roads.

Dozens of pupils at Matthew Arnold School, in Cumnor, led the way for more than 3,500 children who will watch the play — called Chicken — during a three-week tour of Oxfordshire schools.

Last year, 44 pedestrians and 28 cyclists aged between 10 and 15 were hurt on Oxfordshire’s roads, including 13 who suffered very serious injuries.

The play, which examines the importance of wearing a cycle helmet and gives pupils practical workshops on how to resist peer pressure, is being paid for by the county council’s road safety team.

Rodney Rose, Oxfordshire County Council’s cabinet member for transport implementation, said: “There are still too many young lives cut short or altered by a road accident.”
