Boy escaped horror crash, inquest told

A SEVEN-YEAR-OLD boy escaped a car crash in which his mother was trapped in the burning wreckage, an inquest heard.

Coroner Ann Bember was told Jack Purves managed to get free after the crash but his mother Claire died.

The inquest heard it was likely Mrs Purves, of Magpie Road, Banbury, crashed because she was texting a friend moments before the crash on the B425 at Greatworth, Northants.

Other motorists tried in vain to rescue the trapped 34-year-old.

The inquest heard one motorist, Ian Evenden, climbed into the back of the car in an attempt to drag her out, but had to abandon the rescue when the car went up in flames.

The inquest heard the mother-of-two had crashed head-on with a Jaguar X-Type after veering onto the wrong side of the road carriageway.

The couple in the Jaguar, Richard and Janet Wood, walked away relatively unscathed.

The coroner recorded a verdict of accidental death.
