Sheffield’s steel blunted by Malton & Norton Under-17s

7:00am Wednesday 19th December 2012

MALTON & Norton Under-17s came from behind to beat a touring Sheffield side 17-10 on Sunday.

The visitors, like Malton, were constantly knocking on the door and the pressure finally paid off as they took a 7-0 half-time lead.

The turnaround saw Malton caught offside and give away a penalty. Sheffield elected to go for the posts and extended their lead to 10-0.

As in last week’s game, the comeback kicked in and it wasn’t long before Toby Knocker opened Malton’s account with a try.

The margin was reduced yet again thanks to a slick move by Eddie Barnes and Eddie Wilson, which launched Josh Wood on a penetrating run to score under the posts. Alex Caine failed in the drop-kicked conversion attempt which left the scores level.

Malton battered Sheffield’s line and Eddie Barnes finally broke through to score with Caine adding the extras to seal victory.

Malton will be hoping for a repeat performance after Christmas when they have a league rematch against Sheffield.

Malton and Norton Under- 11s returned to winning ways by thrashing Scarborough 11 tries to two on Sunday.

Malton got down to business straight from the kick off with some fine attacking rugby and passing and within the opening third of the game were six tries to nil up.

However, Scarborough started to make in roads in the Malton half, showing good rugby technique, and their efforts were duly rewarded by scoring two tries.

Good tackling from Louis Laird, Thomas Barker, Jack Thomas and Joseph Barker prevented further Scarborough scores.

Malton started to play more open rugby, showing good turn of speed and excellent ball handling skills to add another five tries. All of Malton tries were converted by various Malton players.

Try scorers for Malton were Theo Smerdon (4), Billy Johnson (2), Oliver Kelsey (2), Adam Finlinson (2) and Charlie Blackburn.

Malton are looking for both boys and girls to join their successful squad.

After a four-week break because of bad weather, Malton & Norton Under-9s finally got to play their last game of 2012.

They entertained Scarborough in a couple of games – and won both.

Malton began slowly in their opening game before Nat Esler scored after a good run. More tries came from George Baldwin (2) and Jonty Caukwell as Malton led 20-5 at half-time. Scarborough hit back but a try from Jack Towler saw the game end 25-15.

In the second game, an evenlymatched first half saw a try from Sam Wregglesworth and one from Scarborough. But Malton got on top in the second half with further tries by Mathew King, Towler (2) and Caukwell to run out 25-10 winners. The captain award went to Towler.
