RUBBISH weighing the same as a large killer whale has been cleared from an estate in Bicester.

A total of 8.3 tonnes of rubbish have been cleared from the Glory Farm estate after Cherwell District Council sent its Green Team down to clean up.

Four workers spent 160 hours over four days litter-picking, cleaning up flytips, graffiti and dog mess.

Cherwell District Council’s lead member for clean and green, Debbie Pickford, said: “It is astounding to note that the amount of rubbish collected from just one estate in Bicester is comparable to the weight of a large killer whale.

“However what is most disappointing is that this problem is entirely man-made and can be avoided by people simply taking responsibility for putting their own rubbish in the bin.

“We have had to dedicate 160 hours of officers’ time to clearing this one estate of rubbish, time which could have been spent doing other things.

“While we accept it is only the minority who spoil it for others, it is the majority who suffer. Not only is their council tax spent clearing up after others but the area in which they live and work is spoilt by the mindless actions of a few.”

Leading up to the clean up, the Green Team held a community roadshow in Hart Place to speak to residents to find out any issues with waste and recycling.

In addition to the crackdown on rubbish, another team of people replaced or fixed 10 green bins, eight blue bins and two brown bins.
