A MAN has been arrested after a woman in her 70s was killed in a five-vehicle crash yesterday on the A34.

The woman, from Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire, died at the scene after the black Nissan Note she was driving left the road during the collision.

Thames Valley Police said her next of kin had been informed.

The force said a 45-year-old man from Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, was arrested yesterday on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has been bailed until Thursday, July 23.

Four cars and a white Renault truck were involved in the northbound collision near Weston-on-the-Green towards Junction 9 with the M40 at Bicester, at about 3.30pm.

The other cars involved were a red Renault Scenic, a silver Citroen Picasso and a silver Vauxhall Corsa.

The driver of the Vauchall Corsa was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital with injuries which were not believed to be life threatening and has since been discharged.

Investigating officer Det Sgt Gavin Collier asked anyone who saw the collision or any of the vehicles before the incident to contact police.

Fire and ambulance teams were also present. South Central Ambulance Service spokeswoman Michelle Archer said: “One patient was assessed and treated at the scene before being taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital.

“Five more people were treated at the scene but did not need to be taken to hospital.”

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue spokesman Gabby Heycock: "We were called at 3.28pm and sent appliances from Rewley Road and Kidlington."

He added an air ambulance had been called, but was not needed. The carriageway remained closed until early evening, causing tailbacks along the A34 as far as Pear Tree Interchange.
