TRAFFIC in Bicester’s London Road has been stop-start just like the roadworks themselves following weeks of different projects causing commuters misery.
Gas company SGN is continuing to upgrade gas mains following a previous three-week stint of work before Christmas. And that came after a two-month closure of the level crossing for work on the railway.
SGN spokeswoman Hannah Brett said: “We were working to lay a new gas main in London Road before Christmas.
“This was an essential project to upgrade our network to accommodate the ongoing expansion of Bicester town.
“We are currently working to connect our new gas main to our existing network.
“We planned this work for the new year in consultation with the local authority, following a roadworks embargo over Christmas.”
The two-month closure of London Road level crossing – for Network Rail upgrade works – shut off the main route into town and just weeks later temporary two-way traffic signals were installed.
Previously Oxfordshire County Council said that the London Road works could not be completed at the same time as Network Rail said it would not be safe.
The current works are expected to continue near the Priory Road junction throughout this week.
