TRADERS in Bicester's high street are hoping for a boost as excitement builds for this year's Cherwell Business Awards.

More than 20 companies are in the running for this year's awards on Friday, May 11, which highlight local businesses across the north of the county.

Among those keeping her fingers crossed for the win is ladies' fashion shop owner Paula Pym who is in the running for the Business Person Award.

The nomination comes two and a half years after the then line dancing teacher opened a pop-up shop in Sheep Street.

She said: "I was gobsmacked when I found out, really shocked but really chuffed.

"I am very proud and just living my dream so I can't thank my customers enough.

"I am keeping everything crossed and if I did win it would be phenomenal because it is a massive achievement for little old me who started by selling handbags from home.

"Even if I don't win to make the final is a huge achievement."

The awards, now in their seventh year, has pulled together a range of businesses which organisers say were of a 'very high' standard.

Other companies in the running for awards include Rock the Atic, Blue Planet IT Ltd,Sandy Leaf Farm Ltd, Age UK Oxfordshire phone friends service, Reg's Cafe Group and Whitley Stimpson Ltd.

Shop owner Ms Pym added: "The awards really help because if you are able to say you are an award winning business, people are going to more interested in coming here and into the high street.

"The high street seems to be on the up with a few popular names opening lately with Warrens Bakery and the Torino Lounge opening soon

"It just needs a little more now."

Traders hope by highlighting good local businesses at the awards it will help draw people into the town centre.

Sheep Street in Bicester has seen a slow decline over recent years with various long-standing shops closing.

But in recent months various new businesses have joined the town and traders such as Ms Pym have had a positive response from customers.

Winners for the Cherwell Business Awards will be announced ata ceremony on May 11 at Heythrop Park.
