AN investigation into a blaze at Didcot B power station focused yesterday on a possible fault with a cooling fan unit in one of the cooling towers.

Four cooling towers at the gas-fired station were burnt out in a major blaze on Sunday night.

No one was hurt in the fire, which was tackled by 60 firefighters.

Oxfordshire Fire & Rescue Service is now conducting an investigation into the cause and RWE npower, which runs the station, is also carrying out an investigation.

Firefighters left the power station on Monday and Graham Turner, fire station manager based at Abingdon, did an inspection yesterday morning.

He said: “I’m not part of the fire investigation team but attention is focused on one of the cooling fans in one of the cooling towers.

“The power station has its own technical data and that is being analysed.”

RWE npower spokesman Kelly Brown added: “Initial investigations are showing that the incident is focused on a cooling fan unit fault.

“Further technical detailed investigations are in progress.”

The station produces electricity for a million homes but since the fire can operate at only half its normal capacity.

It is not yet known how long it will take to repair the damage or how much it will cost.
