DRIVERS in Didcot got stuck in major tailbacks yesterday as traffic lights were set up near ongoing bridge repair work.

Foxhall Bridge has been replaced as part of Network Rail’s electrification of the railway, with work continuing until the New Year. Work is also being carried out by National Grid at the A4130 roundabout and the lights were put up without consulting Oxfordshire County Council.

Council spokesman Dominic Llewellyn-Jones said: “As soon as we were aware that work was taking place at peak traffic times we requested that National Grid remove the lights. All future work will take place at night, between 8pm and 6am.”

National Grid spokeswoman Louise Jones said: “The lights caused a higher than expected level of traffic disruption and we apologise for the delays.”
