ELDERLY residents in sheltered accommodation got a Christmas surprise thanks to members of Tesco’s Didcot distribution centre.

Systems team manager Debbie Rendell was one of those who delivered 43 crates of food to residents at Rymans Court in Britwell Road, Didcot, on Wednesday.

The 51-year-old said: “They were overwhelmed and so grateful.

“When we said we were going to deliver a food parcel they expected a little box, not a crate.

“They were really taken aback.”

The residents were given parcels containing foodstuffs including pies, chicken, mince pies and each resident received a poinsettia.

Mum-of-two Mrs Rendell, who lives in the town, added: “To do something for the local community and be involved in something that makes them so happy is great.

“The cost of living is going up but their pension is not. They struggle especially in the winter.

“It gives us a sense of achievement.”

The food came from the company’s involvement in the Fareshare scheme, which sees food distirbuted from supermarkets to the needy.
