A MAN who died following a fire in a public toilet has been named tonight as Jonathan Martin Mills, 49, of Risinghurst, Oxford.

Mr Mills, of Netherwoods Road, was pronounced dead at the scene of the fire at the Southampton Street toilets in Faringdon on Monday afternoon.

Several members of public noticed smoke coming from the toilet block at about 1.45pm on Monday, and tried to kick down a locked cubicle door to free him before calling 999.

Thames Valley Police said a post mortem examination yesterday was inconclusive, and more tests are now being carried out. Mr Mills’ family have been informed, they said.

Senior Investigating Officer, Det Chief Insp Kevin Brown put out a fresh appeal for witnesses to come forward.

He said: “I would appeal to anyone who saw a white man wearing a light green and grey jacket and dark trousers in the vicinity of Southampton Street between 10am and 2pm on Monday to contact me via 101 quoting URN 765 9th Feb.

“I would also appeal to anyone who may have used the public toilets themselves, which is situated close to Budgens, or used the nearby car park, or anyone who was in that vicinity to come forward.

“Further, it has been reported that members of the public saw the fire and tried to help the man out of the toilet block. I am keen to speak to these people as they may have vital information that can aid our investigation.

“I appreciate that some people do not feel comfortable speaking to police directly, so alternatively you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or online at www.crimestoppers-uk.org. No personal details are taken, information is not traced or recorded and you will not go to court.

“Thames Valley Police officers continue to carrying out house to house enquiries today. I would like to once again thank local residents for their assistance and patience while we continue our thorough investigation into this unexplained death.”
