LORRIES travelling on the A34 through Oxfordshire should be banned from overtaking, a councillor has claimed.

Didcot East and Hagbourne county councillor Patrick Greene said that along the major route lorries should only be able to use the slow lane between junctions 13 and nine.

This would prevent them from overtaking throughout the carriageway’s entire length in Oxfordshire.

Mr Greene has proposed a motion to a full meeting of the council that reads: “This council is concerned and alarmed at the recent number of major traffic accidents that have occurred on the A34 in the Oxfordshire County area in recent months.

“Much frustration to fast-lane vehicles arises when two heavy vehicles are in the process of overtaking and with vehicle governors that may well be slightly at variance causing the overtaking procedure to last much too long.”

He said Oxfordshire County Council should urgently call on the Secretary of State for Transport and Highways England to put the restrictions in place.

His motion will be debated by council when it meets at County Hall, New Road, Oxford, on April 14 at 10am.
