A TEAM of support workers from Didcot has received an award for caring for a young woman with learning disabilities during the final years of her life.

The team from charity Dimensions was recognised at the Inspiring People Awards after caring for Linda Wallis, who suffered a severe stroke in May 2012.

Linda’s mother, Marjorie Wallis, who nominated the Mereland Road team, attended the event at Birmingham’s Botanical Gardens on July 1.

She said: “I wish to express my sincere appreciation of all the wonderful care given to my daughter.

“I will forever be grateful for their kindness and perseverance with so many extra difficulties, and how we rejoiced when at last she spoke a few words one again.”

For three years, the group cared for Linda and assisted her with shopping in addition to taking her to singing groups and church.

Mrs Wallis said: “Linda was transferred to a nursing home for the last few months of her life, but received visits from her friends, the carers who were so devoted to her.

“I have no hesitancy in proposing a well-earned Inspiring People Award for the team.”

Claire Truesdale, the manager of the Didcot branch of Dimensions and award winner, said: “The award was well deserved.

“Linda had lived in the service for over 10 years and was always the life and soul of the party. It was a great loss when she passed.

“I couldn’t have been prouder of the team and their dedication to developing their skills further to ensure they were able to meet her ever changing health needs.”

Regional director Luke Joy-Smith said: “This lady fought the odds all her life.

“I am deeply proud that our staff team were able to help Linda get back to doing the things that she loved.”
