PEOPLE in South Oxfordshire have been warned they could be left without a recycling centre if they do not make their views heard.
South Oxfordshire District Council leader John Cotton, pictured, urged residents to respond to Oxfordshire County Council’s proposals to close up to four of the seven recycling centres currently operating.
A consultation on the plans, which were reported in the Oxford Mail yesterday, started on Monday.
Under the proposals, an expanded Drayton recycling centre could serve the whole south of the county but there would be no centres in South Oxfordshire district.
Mr Cotton said: “We fully understand that the county council has to make savings however, as things stand, we could be left without a waste and recycling centre in South Oxfordshire.
“This would mean a much greater journey for many in our district if they need to dispose of waste that can’t be collected on the kerbside.
“We’ve worked very hard to achieve our status as the number one recyclers in the country so seeing recycling options reduced for our residents is very frustrating.”
The consultation, which is available at oxfordshire.gov.uk, in libraries and at County Hall, Oxford, asks people their views on a number of aspects of the county’s proposals.
Among the questions are whether a reduction in the number of sites is a good idea, whether opening hours should be reduced and what times the sites should remain open if hours are cut.
