New pool to replace Didcot Wave high on town priorities

Jo Murphy Jo Murphy

A NEW pool to replace Didcot Wave is high on a list of priorities for the town in 2012.

South Oxfordshire District Council is consulting the public on its corporate plan, outlining what new facilities it should spend money on from 2012-16.

And one of the key proposals is a new leisure centre to replace the Newlands Avenue pool, to meet the needs of the expanding town.

Council leaders won’t decide on the proposal until the budget is finalised in February.

But a capital growth bid of £15m is being put forward to fund the cost of a new leisure centre.

The location is still being discussed, and town council leader Margaret Davies said she thought Didcot Wave might not stay once a new facility was built.

She said: “For years, SODC has been wanting to build a new leisure centre.

“The plans are now being firmed up and one possible site is land to the north of the A4130, north of Ladygrove, which would be accessible from anywhere in Didcot.

“But Didcot Wave is not looking too tired, and it would be wonderful if they could keep that.

“However, it’s possible the council might want to sell the land the Wave is on to make money for the other scheme.”

Jo Murphy, from Upton, who runs Barramundi swimming club at Didcot Wave, said: “They should create a 50m pool at the new leisure centre and keep Didcot Wave open as a leisure pool.”

Cabinet member for leisure Bill Service said £15m funding was likely to be approved by the council next month.

He added: “Didcot Wave is very popular so we are not ruling out keeping it.

“We are looking at ways of funding leisure over the next 25 years and if the leisure team can find ways of bringing in funding from private sources then more than £20m could be spent on the new centre.”

Last March, a report said new leisure facilities in Didcot were needed because South Oxfordshire’s population, 128,277, was expected to grow by more than 14,000 by 2026.

Strategic directors at SODC are keen to see progress on a number of other major schemes affecting Didcot.

These include a £6m scheme led by the county council to refurbish Didcot Parkway forecourt.

Shopping centre developer Hammerson is expected to submit a planning application in the spring for a £125m second phase of the Orchard shopping centre.

And in April, the Science Vale Enterprise Zone, featuring Milton Park and Harwell Oxford science centre, will be officially launched.

I live in Didcot and although it would be nice to afford a new pool whats wrong with the one we have, this money should be used on the cuts for the older people, not only will they lose the day centers they rely on but the local dial-a-ride is to be cut considerably, the bus passes are going to be capped, and the carers funding less. these people should be respected and looked after, not have there pleasures taken away.

i am not a resident of didcot, but i think the money could be better spent. i have been to the wave, and thoroughly enjoyed it. it doesn't need replacing!

I definitely think keeping the wave as it is but building a bigger swimming/diving pool elsewhere is the better option. The wave is great for families but not really suitable for serious swimmers.

I think a new leisure centre in Didcot is a brilliant idea. The Wave gets terribly crowded but it is a lovely pool, and it would be a terrible shame to lose it. And it's got a good gym there. Could it not be kept as a leisure pool/gym? I'm sure it would still make money.

I'm guessing both won't be an option as the council will need to make money somehow to afford a big new leisure centre. Maybe the new one could incorporate a fun pool and a serious swimmer's pool?

Quick!

Someone should let the CPRE know to gird their loins - another swimming pool in Oxfordshire to be built on green space!

Doesn't seem to be the 50m pool that SaveTCP and the IWCA were threatening was going to be built in dear Diddyland though.

For this, and the thousands of new homes proposed for Didcot, wait until the power station closes and build it on that prime site. It has existing road and rail access, and won't ruin more green belt land.

Which one Kenny?

The new Diddyland pool will be sometime between 2012 & 2016.

Earthworks have already started on the pool in Blackbird Leys ward, although the IWCA & East Oxford Conservatives continue to work closely together with SAVE TCP to try and deprive the children of the area of a lovely new fun pool (as well as a great new swimming pool).

Before the wave was built, there was talk by council and papers of having a pool to rival Bracknells Coral Reef or Swindon Oasis. We ended up with a comprimise of the wave, which is much better than than the previos outdoor pool, but the wave is shut most of the time to the public because of club and school uses. So why dont we leave this for fitness swimming and classes as its plenty good enough for that along with the gym, and build a big fun pool where kids can be taken on parents days off, after work etc and get the plans right to rival pools other councils have managed to build. Its a public recreation pool we need, not another club pool
