Drive to deter station car park racers

POLICE are cracking down on drivers using the long-stay car park at Didcot Parkway railway station to race their cars.

A new CCTV system has been installed at the Foxhall car park, which may end what police say is a longstanding problem.

They have also increased their patrols at the car park.

Pc Bob Burrowes, of British Transport Police’s Oxford unit, said: “It appears to be young people and we are aware that there are few places for young drivers to go.

“But the car park is for rail users only.

“It has been a historic issue and you hear reports periodically of people using the car park in an inappropriate manner.

“Hopefully the new CCTV system will allow us to solve this.”

The system, which was paid for by rail firm First Great Western, allows the police to view images quickly, instead of having to wait 28 days as they would with the old equipment.

Officers are investigating a report of vehicles being driven “erratically” around the car park last Saturday evening, at about 6.30pm.

The three vehicles involved were a black Toyota Corolla, a green Renault Clio and a blue Renault Clio.

Anyone with any information about this incident should call BTP on 0800 405040.

Is this wise? All it does is force them to find a less safe spot...

All their doing is improving their driving skills, which makes them safer drivers...

Or maybe open the skidpan tracks the police use to the public...

Brilliant idea!!!!

Maybe if there was something to do in Didcot then they wouldn't feel the urge to do this!

There are plenty of things to do in Didcot , ! the issue here is not only the wreckless driving these young people show, but the noise disturbance too.

Improving ones driving skills does not denote driving at speed like crazed animals !!!

It is not appreciated at 1.30 am when your children are woken up, from the sounds of acceleration, engines, screeching tyres and loud music.

this time of the morning these people should be in bed, ????

I sympathise justclaire but unfortunately I suspect that there will be more reports of these disturbances now that the car park opposite Tesco is locked up at night. And as for the comment regarding nothing to do in Didcot - seems pretty typical of a generation of hoons that want everything handed to them.

This is anti social behaviour, and although it is a small group of people, that suggests to me that the majority of the Didcot population have found something else to do other than cause a nuisance to other members of the community.

While the police are in the mood to go for motorists, perhaps they could "crack down" on the large number of people who drive around with badly aligned headlights. One beam pointing where it should, and the other either not working or aimed right at the eyes of oncoming traffic. I'm sure I can't be the only one to have noticed this

As I was once one of the people who would sit at the station car park and actually organised the only legal and safe meet at Halfords car park I would like to add that these people often take pride in their cars.

Those of you who like stamps would take them and show them off?

Yeah there are some prats out there but don't just assume everyone with a moddified car is out to cause trouble

Also

What is there to do in Didcot for teenagers and young adults?

Would love to hear it!!!!!!!!!

Pub???? Yeah lets all get ratted and then be moaned at for being drunk on the streets.

Cinema???? Yeah just sell an arm and a leg for that!!!!

Why do you need to get "ratted" by going to the pub. Try going to the pub to socialise and chat to friends, but drinking responsibly at the same time.

And for £15 per month, you can get an unlimited pass to the cinema. Admittedly the food and drink is extremely overpriced, but it's a known fact that cinema chains do not make money on film admission, their profit is made on their food.

And I think you've misunderstood the complaints behind this story - there needs to be some distance put between the people who do genuinely meet to show off their cars, and those that meet to cause a nuisance and behave anti socially. And unfortunately the latter group is the one that generates the negative attention.

I for one used to hang around over there when i first got my car. Never did anything wrong, just sat in a row. Spent about an hour or so every night just talking to friends about cars and what not. It's good to have a place to park up and chat with people and socialise. There should be a place designated for people to do this which would make the area safer and there will always be a few who like to try and show off and ruin it for the rest of the crowd but hey, that's life.
