A CAR driver was clocked doing 109mph and a motorcyclist caught doing 108mph on a busy road south of Oxford.

Officers set up a new video speed camera check on the A4074 near the H Cafe, Berinsfield, between 6pm and 8pm on Monday and recorded 32 drivers, in cars and on bikes, breaking the 60mph limit.

The officers were using a new digital camera which sees fines sent directly to the address of any driver caught speeding.

More than 20 of those caught speeding on Monday were travelling above 85mph and will be summoned to court. The others will be sent £100 fines in the post.

The fastest speed recorded was 109mph by a car driver, and a motorcyclist was caught doing 108mph. They face driving bans.

Pc Mark Pilling, of the roads police team, said: “We started using this new equipment a month ago and it is highly effective, in that it allows us to both capture the speed and video of the vehicle and driver.

“This can then be sent to the Fixed Penalty Unit to send a notice to the driver.

“The fact that the camera can deal with offences so quickly frees up time for officers to spend on other jobs. We carried out a check in Berinsfield after receiving complaints from local residents and will continue to act on information we receive in order to keep Oxfordshire’s roads safe.”
