WOLVERCOTE could gain restricted parking following fears that new schemes will push commuters out to the village.

Oxfordshire County Council last week brought in a long-awaited “controlled parking zone” (CPZ) in North Oxford and Cutteslowe.

But residents in other areas nearby have complained that drivers will simply move to their neighbourhoods.

Ward councillor for Wolvercote Jean Fooks said the county council was planning a survey of parking in the area.

She said: “At the moment people are suffering from the displaced traffic from North Oxford and Cutteslowe.

“There will be a survey and we also hope to look at short-term solutions. We have people up there who are righly unhappy about commuters filling up the roads.”

As well as crowding out residential streets such as Fairlawn End, in Wolvercote, Mrs Fooks said there were also examples of junction turnings being dangerously obstructed.

She added: “I would very much welcome any action the county council can take on this.”

St Peter’s Road resident Edwin McClements, 36, said: “It has not been a major problem for us in the past, although you do see cars that are sat on the streets throughout the day that are obviously not owned by people who live here.

“I think we are going to see cars shunted over as people start to notice the change in [North Oxford and Cutteslowe].

“If one avenue gets closed, people just move on to another one. It’s frustrating because if people are driving into Oxford anyway, parking here does not get them much further in. They might as well just use the park-and-ride.”

Parking problems in North Oxford have been largely caused by commuters not wanting to pay for the Water Eaton park-and-ride.

The issue has also been worsened by Oxford City Council’s policy of charging people to use car parks such as the one at Cutteslowe Park.

In Cutteslowe, the problem has been persistant since 2012, with the introduction of controlled parking having taken over two years.

Oxfordshire County Council spokesman Dominic Llewellyn-Jones said: “The council are aware of concerns residents have regarding parking difficulties in Upper Wolvercote.

“The council are considering a number of options that could be implemented, but no decision will be made until full consultation with the community has been carried out.”
