PLANS for a controversial £100m redevelopment of Botley’s West Way have been recommended for approval by a council planning officer.

Vale of White Horse District Council’s Stuart Walker said its planning committee should approve the plan on Wednesday.

Developers Doric Properties and Mace want to flatten Field House sheltered accommodation, Elms Parade shops and surrounding buildings for a supermarket, gym, health centre, hotel, library, community hall, 50 flats and 525 student rooms.

A total of 1,271 objections have been sent to the council since plans, which have twice been revised, were submitted in December.

Concerns include extra traffic, impact on existing businesses and the loss of the 1930s Elms Parade, which campaigners said is a “heritage asset”.

In a report to councillors, Mr Walker said: “The scheme has been designed to a high standard and its incompatibility with the existing townscape, its wider visual impact and other impacts on a non-designated heritage asset and the amenity of neighbours are outweighed by the economic and public benefits of the scheme.”

Councillors will be asked to make a decision when the committee meets from 6.30pm at Abingdon’s Guildhall.
