THE FATE of two turkeys on an Oxfordshire farm this Christmas was decided by an online poll by radio station JACKfm.

Sage and Onion – the two birds – have been spared from the Christmas dinner table after 67 per cent of voters said they should not be eaten.

In a statement on its website JACKfm wrote: “We've been working with PeTA to make sure their forever home will be far, far away from the Christmas dinner table.

“Today Sage and Onion will be heading to the PeTA approved Hopefield Animal Sanctuary.

“We're thrilled the turkeys will be getting a future and JACKfm will of course be making a donation to the sanctuary for their upkeep.”

Earlier this month the poll came under fire from the RSPCA and Queen's Brian May, who both urged the station to rethink the stunt.

But presenter Caroline Verdon insisted it was part of efforts to encourage “an open debate about food provenance.”
