IF YOU were a fan of Spitting Image you will love a brand new exhibition at the Ashmolean Museum which pokes fun at the great and good.
The show, Love Bites: Caricatures by James Gillray, which opened yesterday marks the 200th anniversary of the death of the great caricaturist [1756-1815].
In the late 18th century, Gillray’s political and social satirical engravings were the Private Eye of his day, taking satirical shots at Napoleon, portraying him as a drunk, and the Prince Regent.
Prof Todd Porterfield who is curating the exhibition said: “I’m delighted to be bringing these outstanding works by James Gillray out into the public.”
