THIS dragon-like excavator took on the concrete mass of the Westgate Centre car park, as its demolition continued yesterday.

Like its pre-historic look-alike, the hydraulic equipment wasted little time feasting on much of the iconic city landmark, used by shoppers for more than 40 years.

The car park is being demolished as part of plans to rebuild the shopping centre.

As part of the refurbishment there will be a threestorey John Lewis, a five-screen Curzon cinema, and about 70 new shops.

But some traders fear the new £440m centre could lead to more vacant shops elsewhere in the city.
