THE ancient Wytham Woods were the perfect place to hunt for bugs during a minibeast safari.
Seven-year-old Oliver Rush, from Woodstock, came across a Large Yellow Underwing Moth with help from safari guide Ceri Watkins.
The 90-minute tour and day out was organised by the Oxford University Museum of Natural History, which maintains the woodland area.
Children and their parents were invited to come along and hunt for the minibeasts, which can be found in abundance in woodland areas. Wytham Woods is home to a wide range of habitats, including dead wood, grassy glades, a tree canopy and understorey layers – where smaller woodland plants can be found – as well as leaf litter and rich soils.
The woodland near Oxford was bequeathed to the university in 1942 by the Fennell family.
It agreed to maintain the site’s natural beauty and allow its use for education and research.
