RESEARCHERS, fundraisers and scientists united yesterday to mark World Cancer Day and highlight Oxford's work at the forefront of medicine.

The city's experts have been praised for their pioneering work with £22 million spent on research in the last year.

About 850 people are diagnosed with cancer every week in the south east.

Tara Clarke, research engagement manager in Oxford who organised yesterday's event, said she would encourage the people of Oxford to buy Unity Bands – knotted bracelets – to show their support for people affected by cancer.

She said: “Success stories would not be possible without the commitment of our amazing supporters, who fund each charity’s individual work into the prevention, detection, treatment and support of those with cancer.

“So whatever the motivation – to remember a loved one, celebrate people who have overcome the disease, or to rally in support of those going through treatment – World Cancer Day was a chance to get involved and help reduce the impact of cancer on future generations.”

Councillor Mark Lygo, member for leisure, sports and events, said: "Oxford has been at the forefront of cancer research for many years and I am delighted we are coming together to celebrate World Cancer Day this year and showcasing why it is that Oxford is so well respected around the world."
