BEING under house arrest will not be part of the deal for whomever rents an apartment that once belonged to Burmese democracy campaigner Aung San Suu Kyi.

The four-bedroom flat in North Oxford is on the market for £4,500 a month.

Flat 5 spans the top two floors of 18, Norham Gardens, one of the city's most expensive streets.

Ms Suu Kyi became the equivalent of prime minister of Myamar, as Burma is now known, earlier this year but spent 15 years under house arrest.

Christopher Way, of lettings agent Carter Jonas, said: "Aung San Suu Kyi sold her property a couple of years ago and since then the new owner has rented out the property.”"

The 1,500 square foot apartment has an open-plan kitchen/living room and separate sitting room.

There are four double bedrooms, one opening to a balcony plus a private lift.

The new tenant will have their own parking space and shared use of the garden.

Ms Suu Kyi, 70, studied philosophy, politics and economics at St Hugh’s College from 1964 to 1967.

It was there she met her husband, Tibet scholar Dr Michael Aris and they married in 1972.

The couple had two sons, Alexander and Kim and lived in Oxford before Ms Suu Kyi’s returned to her country to campaign against the ruling military junta.

After Ms Suu Kyi was put under house arrest in 1989, Dr Aris brought up their sons Alexander and Kim, at homes in Park Town and later Norham Gardens.

He died from cancer in 1999.

In 2012, two years after her release, the Nobel Peace Prize winner returned to Oxford for the first time in 24 years.

She collected an honorary doctorate from the university and a Freedom of the City award.

Oxford City Council gave her the honour in 1997 but she was unable to collect it in person because of the house arrest.

Mr Way added: "We believe the apartment will appeal to professionals or downsizers looking to be located in one of the most exclusive and exquisite residential areas of Oxford."
