MORE than £30m could be spent on cycle lanes, better bus lanes, new pedestrian crossings and upgraded junctions in Botley Road, Woodstock Road and Banbury Road.

Oxfordshire County Council today announced proposals to improve the three key routes into Oxford.

All three roads are popular with drivers but the local authority said they are key to getting more people to walk, cycle and use public transport.

Studies have been carried out on each of the roads as the first stage in the improvement process.

It is hoped the reports produced as the culmination of the studies can be used to bid for funds needed to implement the proposals.

Botley Road would gain new cycle lanes, including some "hybrid lanes" that segregate cyclists from vehicle and pedestrian areas.

There would also be improvements to pedestrian crossings and "enhancements for public transport".

In Woodstock Road and Banbury Road there are proposals for enhanced bus lanes, more cycle lanes and improvements for pedestrians as well as some junction modifications.

County council cabinet member for transport David Nimmo Smith said: "The challenge now is to secure the money.

"This may seem like a big challenge but Oxfordshire County Council has a strong track record for succeeding and investing many millions in the transport system.

"Doing these studies also means that we have a useful tool which can help to secure developer contributions for highway improvements."
