RESIDENTS of a care home in Iffley are practising their musical skills ahead of Silver Sunday, a national holiday for the elderly.

In preparation for the event, the Sanctuary Home care staff organised a music therapy session on Tuesday where residents could practise on a range of diverse instruments, including African drums, tambourines and maracas.

On Sunday, October 2nd, the home will host a celebration for Silver Sunday, which encourages care homes to organise events to combat loneliness and isolation in nursing homes.

Sanctuary Care home's manager Sue Stubberfield said: "Our residents adore music, not only do they find it extremely soothing but it also helps bring back some wonderful memories – memories which we are looking forward to celebrating for Silvery Sunday."

The Iffley home will host a swinging tea dance and a live pianist who will invite residents to sing along.

Aileen Crauford, an 89-year-old resident, said: "I can’t wait to celebrate the 1960s – I love the music and can’t wait to dance along."

All are welcome to attend the event, which takes place from 2pm to 4pm at the care home located on Anne Greenwood Close.

Ms Stubberfield added: "It’s the first time we are taking part in celebrating Silver Sunday and we’ve planned a fabulous event to mark the wonderful older people in Iffley so we hope they can join us for what promises to be a very special day."
