AN INVESTIGATION has been launched after more than 50 tyres were found dumped in a field.

The illegal fly-tipping was reported to Cherwell District Council after the 56 car tyres were found off the A422 Stratford Road between Wroxton and Balscote, near Banbury.

The tyres had been chucked over a wall into a ditch, nearby a layby containing glass bottle banks close to Ironstone Lane.

Cherwell District Council environmental enforcement manager Mark Harmon said: "Due to the amount of tyres which were dumped at the scene we suspect this offence was committed by a motoring business or fraudsters posing as legitimate waste collectors.

"Aside from the environmental issue, it is likely that a trusting customer has paid what they believe to be a reputable company to undertake a task on their behalf and it’s unacceptable that they unwittingly helped criminals profit from this crime."

It is believed it happened on or before Tuesday, April 11, when it was discovered by the council street cleaning team.

Cherwell District Council believes they came from a company selling second hand tyres.

Mr Harmon added: "No flytip is acceptable but in this case the act is deliberate and prolonged which shows a blatant disregard to the environment, wildlife and our officers who are tasked with clearing the mess.

"Not only that, it is innocent taxpayers who ultimately lose out as they have to foot the clean-up bill and have resources diverted from tackling other issues across the district."

Cherwell District Council enforcement officers are appealing to anyone with information that could help track down the culprits to help prosecute and recover the clean-up costs.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the council on 01295 227007
