A motorcyclist who performed a 100-yard wheelie on Oxford's Eastern Bypass was yesterday convicted of careless driving.

Florian Combe, of Kelly's Road, Wheatley, pulled the stunt on his red Ducati on April 22 between the Rose Hill and Heyford Hill roundabouts.

His conviction comes just a day after Sandor Ferenci, 28, of Fulwell Close, Banbury, was jailed for 12 weeks for pulling similar stunts at up to 136mph on his motorbike on the A422 near Banbury.

Witney magistrates heard Combe, 26, was travelling at speeds of up to 100mph on the dual carriageway, which has a speed limit of 50mph.

Mohammed Sheik, prosecuting, said: "His vehicle sped up after leaving the Rose Hill roundabout. He pulled a wheelie which lasted about 100 yards."

The court heard Combe was spotted by a police officer who caught up with him when he was forced to stop at a red light at the junction with Horspath Road.

Mr Sheikh added: "He admitted pulling a wheelie — he did not know how fast he was going."

He said Combe estimated his speed to have been about 70mph, but told police: "If you say more I would believe you."

Combe was convicted in his absence and the case was adjourned to November 13, at Oxford Magistrates' Court.
