Bid for faster broadband in Oxford

Oxford is one of 27 cities throughout the UK in the running to become ‘super-connected’, Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt has announced.

The cities are able to bid for a share of a £50m pot to help them roll out ultrafast broadband, in a bid to drive growth and attract new investment.

To be able to bid for the fund cities must have a Royal Charter and more than 45,000 homes and businesses, or more than 35,000 homes and businesses in Northern Ireland.

Within walking distance of Carfax and currently operating at 0.7Mbs (That's Zero Point Seven Mega bits per second).

Try bringing the whole of Oxford up to a "normal" speed for civilised country first.

Can anyone explain how this works? Will it be a new service, or will it mean an improvement to the existing services?

You'll pay extra for it.

All of Oxford has super fast broadband, mine is currently showing 37 meg, just call virgin Media and a very nice man will pop out and install it for you.

I agree with Lord Macvey for once. I have VirginMedia and it is incredibly fast, and I understand that BT was upgraded last year: so I don't see how it could it be made better. I certainly won't be paying for it.

The only bad side to Virgin is the peak time slow down, but even then it rarely drops below 15 meg.
