Two hurt in 'celebration'
9:40am Thursday 14th June 2012 in Oxford
TWO members of Oxford University staff were injured by an “out-of-control” student celebrating the end of exams.
The officials were said to have received bruised ribs and a black eye after the ‘trashing’ incident in Merton Street. Students often spray each other’s gowns with food and Champagne after their finals.
In an email to heads of colleges, proctors Huw Dorkins and Amy Zavatsky said: “Two members of our staff were injured by an out-of-control man thought to be a student who was ‘celebrating’ with one of the finalists.
“The man in question ran away from the scene. The proctors are currently investigating this case, which may become a matter for the police.”
In an email to students, the proctors wrote: “There is no tradition of the abuse of food in ‘trashing’. The very idea is a recent invention.”
A university spokesman said: “Obviously engaging in behaviour that risks or causes injury to others is totally unacceptable.”

No doubt the culprit will be part of the cabinet or mayor of London in a few years time.

I would never waste champagne like that. Just goes to show that all this talk about student poverty means absolutely nothing to some of them. What a complete plank.
Think before you make such idiotic bigoted comments.

I'm not being a bigot; I would have said the same about ANYONE who wasted a bottle of champagne and in the process managed to injure five people! The point is, students have been marching on Westminster and campaigning for a drop in fees, yet have the money to waste on mindless celebrations. I would have said the same if a bunch of teachers or people receiving benefits had done the same thing. Perhaps YOU should stop and think before you make such a criticism as my comment was made in the context of the story.

It doesn't mean financial worries aren't valid, and it doesn't mean students shouldn't sometimes protest at this country's regression towards a class-based and money-based education system.
