Two hurt in 'celebration'

TWO members of Oxford University staff were injured by an “out-of-control” student celebrating the end of exams.

The officials were said to have received bruised ribs and a black eye after the ‘trashing’ incident in Merton Street. Students often spray each other’s gowns with food and Champagne after their finals.

In an email to heads of colleges, proctors Huw Dorkins and Amy Zavatsky said: “Two members of our staff were injured by an out-of-control man thought to be a student who was ‘celebrating’ with one of the finalists.

“The man in question ran away from the scene. The proctors are currently investigating this case, which may become a matter for the police.”

In an email to students, the proctors wrote: “There is no tradition of the abuse of food in ‘trashing’. The very idea is a recent invention.”

A university spokesman said: “Obviously engaging in behaviour that risks or causes injury to others is totally unacceptable.”

No doubt the culprit will be part of the cabinet or mayor of London in a few years time.

He's not had his results yet, who knows, his first words uttered when he starts work might be "would you like fries with that?" ;)

I would never waste champagne like that. Just goes to show that all this talk about student poverty means absolutely nothing to some of them. What a complete plank.

Of course, blowing money you haven't really got on booze and making a drunken plank of yourself is something non-students never do?

Think before you make such idiotic bigoted comments.

It is staggering the level of ignorance that people manage to display in a a sentence or two.

Bigoted? When I was a student I hardly had enough money to eat, let alone waste a bottle of champagne! I'm not being a bigot; I would have said the same about ANYONE who wasted a bottle of champagne and in the process managed to injure five people! The point is, students have been marching on Westminster and campaigning for a drop in fees, yet have the money to waste on mindless celebrations. I would have said the same if a bunch of teachers or people receiving benefits had done the same thing. Perhaps YOU should stop and think before you make such a criticism as my comment was made in the context of the story.

When you were a student Feelings you might have celebrated your finals with a nice cup of tea before a particularly uplifting prayer meeting, but those of us who are human fail sometimes - we blow money we can't afford, get drunk and sometimes cause trouble. This is wrong, but people are fallable especially after the kind of pressure finals puts you under.

It doesn't mean financial worries aren't valid, and it doesn't mean students shouldn't sometimes protest at this country's regression towards a class-based and money-based education system.

I agree with you to an extent King Joke. As for your sarcastic reference to prayer meetings and cups of tea, I hate tea and I am an atheist. I celebrated passing my finals by having a drink, but I didn't pour it all over other people and injure others in the process.
