Oxford University Press (OUP) has said it continues to support Jericho after being given permission to expand, despite concerns that their plans would harm the area.

The company’s proposal was approved by Oxford City Council on Wednesday night.

The work will see the demolition of one of the Grade II-listed building’s wings, replacing it with a carbon neutral tree-storey building.

Concerns were raised it would damage the character of the area, with the Georgian Group highlighting the “deterioration” of Walton Street.

But Stewart Pegum, director of property and facilities for OUP, wanted to reassure local people.

He said: “When I joined we had 1,161 members of staff. Now we have 1,895 and the building is full.

“We continue to be very successful and employ people and bring them to Oxford. We support Jericho.”

Speaking at the council meeting, city councillor John Tanner said: “It is an excellent scheme and brilliantly done. It brings good new investment to Oxford.

“I am pleased it is a place where so many people earn their living.”
