TOILET seat manufacturer Tosca & Willoughby has pledged cash to help preserve the first wooden toilet seat ever found from the Roman Empire, at Vindolanda Fort, near Hadrian’s Wall, in Northumberland.

The family firm, based in The Green, has promised to produce a special Vindolanda edition of its most popular Thunderbox portable toilet seat, with a percentage of the sales going to the Vindolanda Trust.

Director James Williams said: “We are absolutely fascinated by the discovery of a perfectly preserved ancient loo seat.”

Archaeologists unearthed the seat during an excavation in August. Conservation work is expected to take up to 18 months before it can go on display.
