IT IS more than just chests these garments will be supporting, after hundreds of women binned their bras at the weekend to help African women fighting poverty.

More than 450 bras were collected in Wallingford Market Place by members of the organisation, Inner Wheel Club of Sinodun.

They gathered to support Oxfam’s social enterprise project Frip Ethique, based in Senegal.

Member Mildred Sanders said: “The support we had from the public was amazing. People came with filled bags and tipped them out.

“It was just great to be a part of it and knowing that what we were doing was going to a very good cause.

“We are so lucky with all the things that we have, it was just to be able to give the women in Senegal an opportunity to be self-sufficient.”

The donated bras, collected on Saturday are to be sent to Senegalese women, who then sort and sell the undergarments to local traders to help earn a living and escape poverty.

More than 500 traders buy 1,455 tonnes of stock each year from the Frip Ethique project.

The project also provides permanent employment to 40 employees, most of them women.
