Drivers have been warned to take care on the roads this morning following a series of accidents on icy roads.

During the rush-hour this morning there were a series of collisions and incidents across Oxfordshire and emergency services managers warned motorists and other road users to take extra care.

A male van driver suffered chest injuries following a collision with a stationary car in Watlington.

And in Oxford an ambulance was involved in a collision with a car at the Green Road roundabout in Headington.

The accident has now been cleared but there are still delays at the scene.

South Central Ambulance spokesman David Gallagher said: "This was a minor bump between one of our non-emergency ambulances (patient transport service) that was not conveying a patient at the time and another vehicle.

"It was non-injury but caused major traffic problems due to the location."

And a six-vehicle collision on the A4074 between Sandford and the Heyford Hill roundabout is causing delays.

So far there have been incidents involving cars and bikes at:

  • The Green Road roundabout in Headington
  • High Street, Watlington
  • The A4074 at Sandford-on-Thames
  • The A34 southbound near the Peartree interchange
  • New Yatt Road, Witney
  • Oxford Road, Kidlington
  • A34 Abingdon North turn
  • A4185 at Harwell.
  • Wantage
  • Abingdon.

South Central Ambulance spokesman David Gallagher said staff were called to the incident in High Street, Watlington, near the junction with Love Lane shortly before 6.40am.

He said: "We were called after a van collided with a stationary car.

"The van driver suffered chest injuries. He was conscious and breathing."

Mr Gallagher said the man's injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.

There has also been a three-car collision on the A34 southbound just before the exit slip road for the Peartree interchange, and New Yatt Road in Witney has also been blocked due to accident at about 8.10am caused by ice on the road.

Thames Valley Police spokeswoman Charlotte Redman said a car overturned in New Yatt Road and a woman driver and her passenger were temporarily trapped.

She said: "The car left the road and went into a ditch."

Oxfordshire Fire Service spokesman John Hardy said fire crews from Witney freed two women in their twenties from the vehicle and added they were treated by ambulance staff but were not seriously hurt.

Ms Redman added that the collision near the Peartree interchange happened shortly before 8.40am and was a "damage-only" collision.

The road was cleared by 9.20am.

Mr Gallagher warned motorists and cyclists to be extra careful on the roads this morning as they had been called to a number of incidents involving cyclists coming off their bikes and vehicles coming off the road.

He said: "We have had a cyclist collide with a car in Abingdon, two cyclists come off their bikes in Oxford Road, Kidlington and a single car crash in Wantage.

"There's also been a car in the Buckinghamshire, Oxon border area where the car came off the road at a crossroads.

"Given how wet and cold it was overnight, the roads are going to be a bit trickier.

"So people need to take extra care this morning on the roads."

Mr Gallagher said one of the cyclists in the Kidlington accident suffered face and knee injuries and the other suffered an ankle injury.

One of the cyclists was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford following the accident at about 8am.

Drivers were also been delayed by an accident on the A34 at the Abingdon North turn on the slip road for the northbound carriageway.

Ambulance staff did not attend the incident.
