Covered market and 'town pound' among ideas to boost Wallingford in new report

A blueprint for a covered market, a new riverside pub and a ‘Wallingford pound’ note is aimed to draw more visitors to the town.

Developing a Unique Selling Point for Wallingford, drawn up for South Oxfordshire District Council by consultants Miller, says the town’s history and riverside charm should be promoted.

It recommends: l Developing a covered market and crafts venue, at a cost of £20,000 l Building an exemplary riverside pub-restaurant, securing private investment of more than £150,000 l Setting up a ‘Wallingford pound’ for use in local shops and to trade on the town's historic ties with the Royal Mint, costing up to £10,000 l Investigating the feasibility of removing buses from the Market Place, costing £20,000 l Trialling pedestrianisation of the town centre on Saturdays (£5,000) l Creating a town brand, at a cost of £15,000.

The report also suggests developing a programme of events around the town, castle and river, with a dedicated arts and events management team, to attract more people.

Signs and road surfaces also need to be improved, it says.

The report states: “In more recent times, the town has suffered somewhat from a lack of identity and attractors. The appearance of the town suggests an element of neglect, with very few shop facades doing justice to their rich history.

“Its shopping offer has declined in response to the competition from nearby Didcot, and traffic management in the town could be improved.”

The suggested trial period of Saturday pedestrianisation would “provide an indication of the likely impact of full pedestrianisation of the town centre”. Identifying whether buses could be moved away from the Market Place should be a “matter of high priority”.

Similar reports have been prepared for Henley and Thame.

District councillor Rodney Mann, said: “It is one of the council’s priorities to support these towns and, providing funding can be maintained, we will do so.

“The first thing I’ve asked to happen is that the simplest and quickest recommendations are done first, rather than the more complicated and difficult ones; for example, to do with traffic.

“All I can say at the moment is ‘most’ will be carried out.”

Wallingford in Business member David Bosley said the group “cautiously welcomed” the proposals.

He said: “We welcome the initiative and there is undoubtedly good stuff there. We hope common sense prevails in which of the suggestions are rolled out.

“Unfortunately, when the consultation process started, there was limited funding, and that is now going to be even more restricted.”

Museum curator Judy Dewey said: “The best way of bringing more people into the town and boosting the local economy is our heritage. We should be impressing the fact we are the finest Anglo-Saxon fortified town in the country with a medieval castle and medieval townscape. Once people get here, there are many other good things about Wallingford.”

Wallingford Town Council will discuss the report on Monday.

Reading this I am minded that the film Alice in Wonderland is premiering on Friday. I’m sure the sequel to this could be Wallingford in Wonderland. What planet do the SODC live on, certainly one where there is plenty of money to squander on ‘consultants’ who have increasingly daft ideas like the ‘Wallingford Pound’. Come on hands up who ever heard anything so stupid.

This is the same SODC, indeed the same Rodney Mann who recently voted to accept a report in which it specifically advocates 1.4 million tonnes of mineral extraction next to the town (gravel quarry to you and me!). Maybe a picture of a quarry could feature on the ‘Wallingford Pound’. We could even change the town's name to Wallingford **** Gravelpit to equal our double barrelled neighbour. Maybe the SODC might even pay me a consultant’s fee for these ideas. Anything is possible when you have a council managed by people who are so completely out of touch with reality and totally devoid of any common sense.

Oh dear my last post was afflicted by the censor’s aversion to the Latin for ‘with’.

Nope. Not chance, just been told Mr Censor is also the Deputy Assistant Head of the SODC Department of the Elimination of Dubious Words Derived from Ancient Languages (salary £75,000pa)

bring back the stocks and the pillory to the market place. that would provide attraction, entertainment and a link with out heritage and in one stroke solve the problem with hooligans.

Jobs done that will be £50,000 consultants fees please council

So the sign on the Shillingford Road will be changed:-

"Welcome to the historic town of Wallingford, apologies for the dust!"

So the foreign tourists do the Oxford experience, then travel out see the ancient riverside town of Wallingford, with the added attraction of a tour of the gravel pit and concrete works conveniently on the main road into the town. I DON'T THINK SO - Abingdon will be clapping their hands at the total ineptitude of the SODC.

Can you hear that? That's the final nails in the coffin going in. Pedestrianising Wallingford is a big mistake,it works in big cities but in rural towns it will just make people shop elsewhere. As will moving the busses from the Town Centre. There's no feasible place for them to go other than the main square.

As for "The Wallingford Pound", what a joke that is? Do the councils have nothing better to spend their time and our money on?

The way to revitalise Wallingford is to lower rates and get some plod on the beat to try and clear up the "yoof" (not the good law abiding type) who insist on intimidating and spoiling our fair town.

Yet another example of politicians happy to squander and waste our money. After wasting £15,000 on the flawed Studio REAL report they now pay more of our money to come up with this range of ideas. The Wallingford Pound at a cost of £10,000!! This is not Disney. Does anyone really think that putting another barrier between retailer and customer by having to 'exchange' currency will help. We also have a new town marketing manager at a cost of £20,000. Instead of wasting all of OUR money on this kind of rubbish why don't the council simply use the money on reducing business rates on shops in the town to attract new, innovative retailers. Oh, hang on, that's common sense and won't produce nice fat fees for consultants so no chance of that happening.

Is this ‘Wallingford Pound’ going to be paper money or coins, if the later could they not be made of chocolate then be covered in gold and silver foil to give them the appearance of ‘real money’. Maybe a piece of string could be attached to them and the tourists could hang them on the tree at Christmas to remind them of Wallingford.

Do you think I am on to something? Maybe one day if I have enough ‘clever’ ideas I could become an SODC ‘consultant’ and earn pots of money.

Well said but consultants and common sense are like holy water and vampires they do not co-exist together. Another example of non co-existance is SODC and intelligence. The proof of this is only a fool at the SODC would not realise that by allowing such stupidity as the 'Wallingford Pound' to be published would just serve to make the SODC a laughing stock.
