Council tax prize to boost bills switch

HOUSEHOLDERS in two Oxfordshire districts are being invited to sign up to receive their council tax bills by email.

And, as an incentive, two of those doing so will get their council tax bills paid for a year.

Vale of White Horse and South Oxfordshire district councils are each offering the prize in a draw which includes everyone who signs up to the scheme by the end of January.

The councils say sending bills electronically could save them more than £64,000 a year in postage, printing and paper.

To sign up, visit the councils' websites.

This is a positive cost-saving initiative and should be welcomed as such, but we should not forget that there are many people who are still not (and may never be) 'online', nor that many experts have warned of the "virtual irreversibility of digitalisation" and the difficulties this may pose for the elderly (who often embrace technology with alacrity) when they - as organisations representing their interests often point out - eventually reach a point where failing sight, the inexorable progress of technology and the costs of keeping up to date become too much, and they wish to revert to paper and 'snail mail'.

A further issue is that in these days of constantly rising prices internet access is a luxury. It is certainly an item I am considering for the chop if prices rise much more.
