Wind of change drives energy projects

A WIND turbine could be built on the site of an Iron Age hill fort near Wallingford.

Sustainable Wallingford, a community group established in 2003, has won a Government grant for £88,000 to carry out home energy surveys for 300 homes in the town.

But the funding also covers the cost of a renewable energy study for the area, including checking out the feasibility of putting a wind turbine on Cholsey Hill, between Cholsey and South Moreton.

Organisers of the group say Cholsey Hill would be a good location because the nearest residents are a kilometre away and would not be disturbed by any turbine noise.

Science writer Sue Roberts, who is leading the group, said: “A wind turbine on Cholsey Hill is potentially quite exciting – some people worry about the noise, but turbines are not very noisy and if the turbine is a kilometre away you would not be able to hear it.

“We will get a professional organisation to come in and assess the possibility of putting a turbine there and we will need to put up a proper test turbine to see if there is enough wind.

“People would buy shares in a turbine company and supply electricity by selling the power to the national grid.”

Ms Roberts said a public meeting would be held in the next two months so residents could discuss the proposal.

She added that Westmill Wind Farm, which has five turbines near Watchfield, could provide information to help them set up.

Sustainable Wallingford also wants 300 residents to sign up for a home energy survey, for advice on insulating their homes and other energy-saving measures.

Ms Roberts’ home is to become a demonstration house for the surveys.

I'm all for renewable energy, but not on historical sites, I trust there will be a full archaeological survey done, to ensure the turbine doesn't destroy anything.

For their sake, I hope its quieter than the ones at Watchfield. When the wind is from the south west (prevailing) they make an awful droning noise which often keeps us awake and sometimes wakes us up. Turbines are fine, but they need to be well away from peoples houses and we live a couple of miles from Watchfield!.

If only you knew what was obliterated when Didcot A was built. Oh and yes, a full survey must be done by law.

The only noise I ever here at Westmill is the unrelenting racket of the A420 roadway 24 hours a day, 7 days a week all year, and during the summer, the glider tugs and the swarms of tractors and combines crawling all over the factory floor of agribusiness we call the 'countryside'. I hope they put up an Enercon turbine as these are direct drive (like a giant bicycle hub dynamo) so are essently silent on operation.

We need to get the Government onside, as well as local councils and others, if we are going to stop these wind turbines being built.

Are you disillusioned by rising electricity prices, over dependence on the "green" dream and the destruction of our countryside then please register your objection to the Government by googling "petition 22958" and following the link.

Please pass this message on to Councillors, members of your community and anyone else you know to persuade them to sign up too. If you are really concerned about wind turbines please write a letter promoting this petition to the Editors of your local newspapers.

Here we go again - blaiming renewable energy for price rises instead of the greed of energy companies and the worsing world wide fuel shortage - renewable energy reduces demand for fossil fuel and therefore world energy prices - sadly the NIMBY movement will blame everything on wind turbines - they'd blame ingrowing toenails on wind power if they could.
