PLANS have been put forward for 555 new homes in Wallingford.

St Edward Homes and the Prudential Assurance Company Ltd have submitted the outline planning application to South Oxfordshire District Council.

The council’s core strategy had proposed siting the homes at Winterbrook off Reading Road, instead of at Slade End Farm off Wantage Road, but a planning inspector selected Slade End Farm.

The inspector’s final decision to choose Slade End Farm was due to sensitivities at Winterbrook, linked to historic conservation, and the closeness to a possible minerals extraction site.

The outline plans are for the new homes, a new primary school and access road.

Town councillor Bernard Stone said: “This outline application was expected at the beginning of the year so there has been some delay.

“There was a difference of opinion among residents about where all these new homes should be built.”

Planners are due to consider the outline application for Slade End Farm by December.
