TWO Oxfordshire schools were given surprise inspections in September.

Ofsted inspectors carried out the no-notice inspections at St Edburg’s CofE School in Bicester and King Alfred’s Academy, Wantage on September 17 and 18.

St Edburg's was told it needed to improve after worries about low attendance and a decline in standards.

King Alfred's Academy was visited over concerns of management of behaviour and poorer students underachieving.

Inspectors found students had an excellent understanding of what was expected of them and the impact that poor behaviour has on learning.

Ofsted selected 35 maintained schools and academies  for a no-notice inspection between September 1 and October 20.

In addition, Ofsted conducted a small number of other inspections without notice during this period
in a separate exercise, including five monitoring visits to schools in Birmingham as part of the Trojan Horse investigation into radicalising Muslims.
