Just call him the Easter Bunny. Wantage charity champion Ray Collins led a team who collected 816 Easter eggs and treats for the elderly and vulnerable across Oxfordshire.

Mr Collins, who manages Peter Ledbury Electricals in Grove Street, was helped by Wantage Neighbou-rhood Police Team and community first responder ambulance volunteers.

He split the haul between elderly residents, disabled and sick children.

On Thursday, March 12, Mr Collins and PCSOs Thomas Walcott-Smith and Chris Ratcliffe delivered 350 of the eggs to Fitzwaryn School, Charlton Day Centre, Grove Day Centre and Wantage Day Centre.

Mr Collins said: “It was a truly fantastic day delivering the eggs. We started with Fitwaryn expecting to be there about 20 minutes but stayed for two hours visiting every class.

Our top stories

“It really is a fantastic school every student was polite and respectful to us, but also to each other - encouraging each other to pick an egg and cheering when they had.

“Lots of lump-in-throat moments, such wonderful children and so many lovely smiles - we were all touched by their kindness to each other.

“I have had lots of parents and grandparents contacting me since we delivered, expressing their thanks and tales of eggs being hugged and lots of beaming smiles.

“It’s such a simple act of kindness but it means so much. As one friend put it, ‘mission accomplished’.”

On Sunday, March 15, Mr Collins and some friends took more than 400 Easter eggs to Oxford Children’s Hospital, Sobell House Hospice in Headington and Helen and Douglas House children’s hospice in East Oxford.
