Grove airfield homes proposals go on show

DEVELOPER Persimmon Homes is holding a public exhibition this week about its plans to build 2,500 homes on the former Grove airfield.

People will be able to take a look at the proposals and make comments at the Old Mill Hall, in School Lane, between 10am and 4pm on Friday and Saturday.

The firm is set to submit a planning application for the project later this year.

I've looked at the Master Plan and come away very unimpressed. There is no detail in the plan and there are some dangerous assumptions, given the current economic climate.

It was good to see lots of people at the Hall though. And by the looks of it everyone there opposed to this development too.

I agree with you Gazman. It was quite obvious from talking to the 'representatives' of the developers that this was an ill thought out proposal designed to give maximum profit to them at minimum cost and contribution to the locality. There is no plans to build the much needed junior school (let alone the senior school) until there is enough housing for approximately 200 children who will attend existing schools apparently in the meatime! There was confusion between 2 of the representatives as to when the main road running up the middle of the development would be connected to the A338 and who was responsible for doing this (them or the council). The plans for dealing with the well known local flodding problem relies on permeable membranes that will require regular cleaning (by whom) and will require lifting and refurbishing in 15-20 years. The whole build is not expected to start for 3 years and then take another 12 after that. Grove would be surrounded by such building works if the reservoir also goes ahead. When I asked why they housing estate was needed I was told that 'Government' had decided that this is where the jobs would be (it later turned out that he meant Oxford and Milton Park) but couldn't explain how the existing infrastructure would support the best part of an extra 3K cars per day. There would also be 40% 'social' housing! I have nothing against the concept of social housing as I was fortunate enough to benefit from this myself in the past but where are the people going to come from to fill them? If there is local demand then fine but current experiences on the new St Mary's estate suggests otherwise. In short........a disaster waiting to happen.

It was very good to see the event so well attended by local people and hopefully the county council will take note of this and decline the planning permission. Failing that I'm sure that Ed Vaizey will lend a sympathetic ear as this is what we pay him for. This is not a political statement beyond the fact that any MP should be serving his constituency and I have had good results in talking to him in the past.

There are currently 3 news items on this topic ... is it just me being suspicious that news items are recycled under a slightly different heading but with no significant difference in content in order to lose the comments already made and prevent a groundswell of opinion coming together?

The people of Grove do not want this development. It will kill off any sense of village we have.
There were people in tears at this "exhibition".
It is a heart breaking exercise that is not necessary. We do not need to build new homes. There are thousands and thousands of empty homes across the country - surely these should be used first.
work in Oxford and leave home at 7.30 in the morning. If I leave any later I know I will get stuck in horrendous queues. How much more traffic will these additional 2500 homes generate?
Crazy, crazy, crazy.
