Fly-tippers pile up rubbish at recycling site

PILES of rubbish were dumped at a Wantage recycling point as dustbin crews battled to clear extra Christmas waste.

A vast mound of bags covered the Limborough Road site before council contractors Biffa tidied the mess on Wednesday.

Vale of White Horse District Council spokesman Martin Crabtree said there had been fly-tipping incidents at most of the recycling centres in the district.

He said: “Our waste recycling crews are currently working very hard to clear the extra waste created over Christmas.

“These areas are usually emptied once a week, although our crews have been visiting them more regularly during this busier period.”

He added: “We would urge residents to ensure they are leaving the correct waste at these sites and only placing material in the bins provided.”

Jenny Hannaby, district council member for Wantage Segsbury, added: “People are obviously using it as a dumping ground. It shows that people are not adhering to the usual waste methods.”

One driver, who did not want to be named, said: “It is horrendous here.”

And Patrick O’Leary, Wantage Town Council member, added: “It is not very attractive and it is the sort of thing that should be addressed.”

But Wantage Charlton district councillor John Morgan there was often too much rubbish for the bins at the site.

He said: “That is normal for this site, go down there any weekend and you will see for yourself.”

In Oxford, in the week following Christmas, 333 tonnes of recycling and 384 tonnes of refuse were collected.

During in the week before Christmas 221 tonnes of recycling and 264 of refuse were picked up by council workers.

Waste reduction body Waste and Resources Action Programme spokesman Gill Dickinson said: “We would encourage people to recycle when they can, but if it is clear their local site is overwhelmed by the post Christmas rush, then to hold on to items for a bit longer.

But we understand that isn’t always possible.”

She added: “We have sympathy with the local authorities as they will have a lot of extra material to work with.”

In the Cherwell district in the week after Christmas 380 tonnes of refuse and 402 tonnes of recycling were collected, compared to 392 tonnes refuse and 408 tonnes of recycling in the week before.

None of the other district councils could provide figures for pre- and post- Christmas waste collections.

Perhaps VOWH DC should investigate why the contract they hold with Biffa Recycling isn't meeting the reasonable expectations of the residents?

No they were not. Piles of recycling were left next to full recycling bins because the council were too stupid to realise that less collections + more recycling materials over the Christmas period would create an overspill. So to try and hide their own incompetence they blame the people that pay their wages, and holiday pay. The more that councils try to act like dictators, the more we will rebel. So next year Mr Council man you may well, find tons of dumped "rubbish" and it will be our response to your attitude to us this year for trying to be responsible, and recycle.

Hum!!!
The easiest solution to this is have green bins emptied back to back over the Christmas and new year.thus elevating the waste at the recycling points, and to accuse regular tax payers of fly tipping is darn right rude.I struggled with the rubbish over this period and that's 2 peoples worth so how families of 4 and above couped I dont know, yes I do they didn't come on VOWH this needs addressing.

Surely the rubbish being left there is much better than people dumping their rubbish in ditches and hedges along the roadside.
For weeks now i've seen a mattress dumped on a dirt track between Childrey Holloway and Sparsholt. Wonder when that will get picked up.

The same happened at the Orchard Centre in Didcot. The waste left was because the containers were full. No one seems to have thought that it needed clearing more often over Christmas. It was not fly tipping!

Simply the normal bin collection disruption over Christmas generates piles of rubbish at a time more is generated generally. I made three trips to the local tip over Christmas (having made sure it was open). With the bins being a near two week break, it was that or have the fly tip in the street, like a number of residents managed! The two weekly bin collection works, when it is two weekly, it falls down rapidly after that. Last year it could be blamed on the snow, this year? I guess it's down to those who know everything but reality.

Mr. John Morgan "says that there was often too much rubbish for the bins at the site". Hello. If that is the case, why is he, as district councillor on the VWHDC, not doing anything about it?
