Garden waste bills may never be paid

VALE of White Horse District Council may never recover thousands of pounds of unpaid bills for the use of its garden waste service, a scrutiny committee has been told.

An examination of the service last year found thousands of errors in the system, including direct debit bills rejected, invoices not raised for years and errors in records of service users’ addresses.

Since March, the council has been chasing £106,000 of unpaid bills, and has so far recovered £56,000.

But a report to be presented to councillors on Thursday warns: “We may not be able to recover all the money owed if some customers refuse to pay.”

They should never have charged for the service in the first place, garden waste can be composted & reused, and it means less going to landfill, so people using the service were saving the council money.
The outstanding amount should just be written off, doing that will probably cost less than trying to reclaim it anyway.

The invoices seem to get sent from Shepton Mallet! Perhaps that was part of the problem.Mine was always wrongly addressed too. Shambles.

The irritating thing is that when the council make these mistakes we, the tax-payers, pick up the tab. I agree entirely that this should never have been charged for separately - our council tax has always covered waste disposal but the council clearly see this as a revenue generating activity.
