£1.13m police station construction under way
12:00pm Monday 27th August 2012 in Wantage
WORK has started on a new £1.13m police station in Grove.
The station at Grove Technology Park will be for operational teams and will not have a public counter service.
It will replace Wantage Police Station, in Church Street, which is due to close next spring.
Thames Valley Police Authority spokesman Candy Stallard said: “It was designed to be cost effective and will result in running cost savings when compared to the current police station.”
Construction of the new Grove station started last month and is due to finish early next year.
It will provide 24-hour cover and be a base for response and neighbourhood officers and special constables.
An £80,000 counter service for the public will be opened beside Wantage Library, in Stirlings Road.
Planning permission for the counter – which will see the conversion of the library garage – was granted by Vale of White Horse District Council in April.
Police said a contractor will be on site next month and the front counter is expected to open early next year.

A. When it costs more than £1,130,000 and is not available to the public
Perhaps G4S would have been cheaper.
At least GTP must be rubbing their paws as no doubt they would have some freehold value in this project.
Wonder why the police resort to converting a windowless garage in the library, when they have a window display in one unit at Kings Shopping Centre. Guess that then it's not their own money or something.
What a porker!!
