Vale council spells out how number of councillors will be cut
1:00pm Sunday 26th August 2012 in Wantage
VALE of White Horse District Council has revealed how wards will change when the number of councillors is cut from 51 to 38.
The council agreed to cut the number of councillors in February in a move that would save more than £50,000 in allowances.
It has now announced the changes, which have to be formally approved by Parliament.
The shake-up would increase the number of wards from 29 to 33 but more would have just one councillor instead of several.
The plans include cutting the number of Abingdon members from 14 to 10.
Botley and the two existing Cumnor wards would be combined in one new ward.
The three-councillor Faringdon and Coxwells ward would be reduced to two members and the eight councillors covering Wantage and Grove would be cut to six.
The changes would take effect from elections in 2015.
The council’s current make-up is 31 Conservative, 18 Liberal Democrat, one Labour and one independent.
Councillors will be asked on Wednesday to submit the proposals to the Local Government Boundary Commission.
Last year, neighbouring South Oxfordshire District Council voted to reduce its membership from 48 to 30 councillors.
