A WEB page set up two days after the death of Liberty Baker with the aim of raising £600 to pay for a memorial has now raised over £5,800.

The 14-year-old from Witney died on June 30 as she was walking to school when a car mounted the kerb on Curbridge Road.

Liberty’s friend Amber Cumberland,14, set up the Go Fund Me page with the intention of raising enough money to pay for a bench and memorial tree at the Henry Box School.

She said: “It (the amount raised so far) has really surprised me, I just set it up because I thought it was something to help.

“The money is going through the school, they will use it to pay for a memorial and then what’s left will go to her parents.”

A local tree surgeon is believed to have donated an apple tree known as the Liberty apple tree to form part of a memorial.

It could be planted at the Henry Box School as early as next month alongside a bench which is believed has been donated by B&Q.

A plaque has also been donated by the Witney Trophy Centre.

The Go Fund Me page was set up as part of a Facebook page called Henry Box, Plant a memorial tree for Liberty Baker, which has more than 6,000 likes.

A man arrested in connection with Liberty’s death on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving has been rebailed by police until September 14.
