OXFORD ground to a halt as RAF reservists based at Brize Norton exercised their Freedom of the County by parading through the city centre.

More than 100 members of 4624 Squadron paraded on Saturday to celebrate receiving the honour from Oxfordshire County Council in May last year.

The squadron paraded through Witney to mark Battle of Britain Week last month.

Hundreds of well-wishers lined the streets, waving Union flags, taking photographs and applauding as the squadron was led by the Band of the Royal Air Force College at Cranwell, in Lincolnshire.

The squadron’s commanding officer, Wing Commander Rob Williams, said: “It was tremendous to see so many attending to observe the ceremony, which further highlights the link between the military and local population.”

After forming up in Keble Road, the squadron marched to St Giles for the presentation of the Freedom Scroll.

County council chairman Anne Purse and the squadron’s honorary air commodore, Air Marshall Philip Sturley, took the salute and inspected the parade with the Lord Lieutenant of Oxfordshire, Tim Stevenson.

The parade then continued to County Hall, where a reception was held.
