AN ELDERLY woman was rescued from a river as she tried to rescue her dog  this morning. 

Firefighters had to pull the pensioner from the River Evenlode nesr Stonesfield after she got into difficulty.

An Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "An elderly female entered the River Evenlode, near Church Street and Brook Lane, to help her dog out of the river.

"Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service received a call about the incident at 10.31am.

"Fire engines from Kidlington, Charlbury and Witney fire stations attended the scene. The woman and her dog were helped out of the water and from the river bank by firefighters using water rescue equipment and a short extension ladder.

"The woman was placed in the care of the the ambulance service. Firefighters left the scene at 11.08am."

South Central Ambulance crews were called to the scene at about 10.30am.

Spokesman Michelle Archer said: “We received a report of a woman in the river.

“Fortunately the patient was uninjured and treated at the scene.

“She did not need hospital treatment.”

A Stonesfield resident, who asked not to be named, said: "All I know is there was a lady who got into difficulty in the river trying to save her dog and she's fine."

It is understood the woman is local, but not from the Stonesfield area.

An eyewitness said an entrance to the river was blocked as emergency crews attended.
